Frequently Asked Questions:
The Hurricane allows your computer to run a bit richer than the factory Air/Fuel setting. Factory settings are generally leaner (closer to the green bar) than ideal for torque and horsepower (red bar in graph) to meet the CAFE requirements in the US. In addition to running a bit more rich your ECU will advance the timing to improve performance. The F5 is the "ultimate" version- you can flip it "off" for everyday driving and just flip it "on" at the track or off-road. Horsepower is a unit of measurement. 1 Horsepower or HP as it is commonly referred to is equal to 745.7 Watts. But that is not really what matters to you - horsepower is the thing that makes your car go. More horsepower will make your car faster! An ECU is a computer that manages your engine and keeps it running. It receives data from the different sensors on the engine and reacts accordingly, adjusting the level of fuel injected into the engine as well as the timing advance. A piggy back device is a device meant to externally alter one or more signals sent to the ECU. This is a very common thing to do but also very expensive. Most piggy back devices cost a few hundred dollars. If your vehicle is equipped with electronic fuel injection, it will. 99% of cars manufactured in or after 1990 are equipped with a fuel injection. It will not work on turbocharged vehicles. Yes! This is the whole point! It has been dyno proven that this device can add up to 20 HP to your vehicle!
Installation is very easy! Detailed instructions are included with every product as well as all necessary hardware. No special skills are required. A simple pair of strong pliers will be necessary for the install. Higher octane fuel is not required but will improve the performance of your car with Hurricane products. Higher octane fuel resists pre-detonation ("spark knock") better than lower octane fuel and burns a little slower. Spark knock is the pressure wave of burning fuel that normally pushes your piston down (creating power) hitting the cylinder on the way UP (fighting the natural motion of the engine and robbing power). Higher octane fuel does not in general provide any benefit to cars without high performance modifications, high compression, and/or advanced timing. In fact it may decrease the performance of your car if you use too high an octane!! Stock vehicles are not tuned to be on the bleeding edge of timing and are not prone to spark knock. If you increase compression or advance the timing you may find you hit a limit and you begin to experience spark knock. Modern vehicles have a knock sensor and the computer retards the timing to compensate for the knock in cases like this. When you add the Hurricane IAT sensor mod you tell the computer to advance the timing since you have "colder" intake air. The computer will advance the timing, but if it senses knock it will back off a bit. If you are using the Hurricane F5 or F3 you can use higher octane fuel to dial-in more timing advance without hitting the limit. Using the F1 or F2 you may benefit from higher octane fuel but you need to test and see if it makes a difference. The goal is to advance the timing to exactly the spot where you just miss getting spark knock. The theory that higher octance fuel is better for all cars and has more and better additives is just not true! Buy the right octane fuel for your vehicle! Probably not! The after-market computer chips already have an offset for the IAT sensor built into their code. (Oddly enough some people do find these add benefit even with the after-market chips. This may be due to poor IAT sensor location causing improper readings or a sensor out of tolerance. If you want to try it go ahead- we will refund your money if you do not get an added benefit!)
